The 5 Step Process for Building the Perfect Leather Strap

Summary

Most watch straps are made at scale, on machines - not by hands. From hide selection to final QC, every strap follows a process built on craft traditions the watch industry has spent decades forgetting. Here are the five steps.

Step 01

Selecting the Hide

Every strap starts with the hide. We source full-grain leather from northern Italy's finest tanneries - retaining the natural surface so every strap carries its own character in texture, tone, and grain. We look for 1.8mm minimum thickness, consistent density, and the right tannage for durability and patina.

Step 02

Cutting & Skiving

Straps are cut against the grain for tensile strength — resisting tearing and stretch over time. Each blank is cut to exact tolerances, then the ends are skived: thinned so the strap tapers cleanly under the buckle. Done badly, skiving creates weak points. Done well, it's invisible.

Step 03

Stitching

Stitching is where a strap earns its price. We saddle-stitch - two needles from opposite sides of the same thread. If one section breaks, the rest holds. Pre-waxed linen thread, pulled tight by hand. Stitch count, spacing, and depth are fixed. Any deviation is redone. It's slower. It's right.

Step 04

Edge Finishing

The edge tells you everything. On every strap, edges are bevelled, sanded through multiple grits, burnished with a wood tokin and water, then painted with matched edge paint. The process takes longer than the stitching. The result lasts years without fraying or cracking.

Step 05

Hardware & Final QC

Buckles are 316L stainless steel - marine grade, corrosion-resistant, worn against skin. Spring bars are matched to your lug width. Every strap passes a point-by-point inspection: stitching tension, edge finish, hole placement, hardware alignment. Only those that pass leave the workshop.
